Laminated Glass – Properties and Applications

In construction, there is a very common type of glass used called laminated glass. However, not many people know what laminated glass is and what advantages it has. So, in this article we will introduce you in detail about this type of glass.

1. What is laminate glass?
Laminate glass is also known as safety glass. So what is laminated glass?

This is one of the safest glasses available today. They help to protect the user from injury even if the glass is broken. Glass can consist of 2 or more layers of glass glued together with a special flexible, durable liner PVB – Poly Vinyl Butylene film. The characteristics of this lining are very high ductility and adhesion. Therefore, when the glass is subjected to a strong impact and is broken, the glass instead of splashing everywhere will adhere to the PVB film and will stay in the frame. Thus, the user will not need to worry about injury anymore. In addition, this type of glass can also resist the penetration of outside people or impacts from the outside.

2. Types of safety glasses
People divide safety glass into 2 types: laminated glass and tempered glass

As introduced, safety glass consists of 2 or more layers of glass glued together thanks to PVB film. Each type of film will create different types of laminated safety glass, such as clear glass, tinted glass, reflective glass, etc. After gluing the glass layers, the glass can continue to be processed such as cutting, drilling. , grinding, …so can produce all kinds of goods.

3. The advantages of laminated glass
Double- or multi-layer safety glass has many outstanding advantages, such as:

3.1. Limit UV rays
Some types of laminated safety glass can block up to 99% of the harmful effects of UV rays without hindering the brightness of the user or the growth of plants behind the glass.

3.2. Safe
Referring to safety glasses, it is impossible not to mention the safety advantages of this type of glass. If ordinary glass is broken, shards of glass will be scattered, possibly injuring people around. However, laminated safety glass is different, they are not prone to sudden breakage, even if it is double glazed. Thanks to the PVB layer in between the two layers of glass, it will reduce the impact of external forces and help the glass fragments remain on the glass frame even when broken.

3.3. Security
Another advantage of laminate glass is that it can resist human intrusion from the outside. Even if the glass is broken, it’s still pretty solid. In addition, this type of glass also cannot be cut from one side and ordinary glass cutting tools do not work with this type of glass. Some types of thick laminate glass can also withstand the buoyancy of bombs and even rifle bullets.

3.4. Noise reduction
Compared with ordinary glass, laminate glass has much better noise reduction ability. At airports, hotels, recording studios, data processing centers, etc., when you want to soundproof, you can install this type of glass to minimize noise.

3.5. Heat resistant and control heat absorption
Laminated safety glass can reduce heat absorption as well as control glare, making the interior space cooler. The glass meets the standards of insulating glass and does not break when exposed to high temperatures.

3.6. Durable
Another advantage that cannot be ignored of laminate glass is its high durability. Even this type of glass is also used to make floors, swimming pools, domes, roofs, etc.

3.7. Designs
Although it is a 2-layer safety glass, it also has a high thickness, in addition, the color, size and shape of the glass is also diverse, so it is suitable for use in many cases.

3.8. Low distortion
The glass has low distortion when firing and gives a more beautiful and realistic image when viewed through the glass than normal.

Although there are many advantages, but this type of glass still exists a few disadvantages that are too high cost and difficult construction and installation, having higher standards than when installing ordinary glass.
